Rugby Union: Waterloo taught a lesson at Cambridge

HAVING targeted this match as a potential away win Waterloo will be disappointed not only with this result but a below par performance with again indiscipline, which at one stage reduced the side to 13 men, giving serious cause for concern.

Cambridge had the visitors on the back foot from the kick off and, unable to break out of their own 22, were always under pressure from a very workmanlike pack. The pressure told and with Waterloo short on numbers out wide Chris Lombard had space to cross for a try in the corner.

In the final 10 minutes of the half Waterloo at last raised their game but despite some enterprising excursions into the Cambridge 22 their only reward was a penalty from Alex Davies.

Although Cambridge increased their lead at the beginning of the second half with a penalty from Luke Fielden Waterloo began well but as the momentum began to gather James Hall was dispatched to the sin bin. Cambridge took full advantage and from a drive to the line Chris Blom forced his way over, leaving Luke Fielden with an easy conversion, the try resulting in a second yellow card for the visitors – this time Jon Nugent off for punching.

Although reduced to 13 men Waterloo defended well to prevent any further score.

WATERLOO: De Jager, Freijoo, Mazzucato, Duffy, Parrot, A Davies, Stringer, Hall, Ince, Pani, Nugent, Davidson, T Davies, Palmer, York. Rep: Ormisher, Ruwers, Smith, Lowdon.
