THE big surprise in South Lancashire/ Cheshire One League at the weekend was the margin of Hoylake’s victory over Widnes.
Widnes went into the game with the better record but it was Hoylake who won 25-3. Coach Lee McDermott could not offer an explanation for a poor Widnes display.
Even Hoylake were surprised as they capitalised with three tries via brothers Dominic and Mike Kearney and Dan Gleeson with Steve Young kicking the other points.
Wirral, after a good start, have suddenly gone off the boil. The 17-15 defeat at Ruskin Park was their third in a row with an extra conversion tipping the balance the way of Park.
Despite another promising display by Anthony Molloy Anselmians could not match Sale in a 33-13 defeat. Aspull found leaders Wilmslow too strong and gained a consolation try in a 43-5 defeat.
Wigan did well to secure a 20-15 success at Burnage.
There is more league action on Saturday, including an Anselmians v Hoylake derby
at Malone Field.
Wirral need to halt the rot at home to Sale. Other fixtures include Aspull v Ruskin Park, Widnes v Burnage and Wigan v Bowdon.
