Bowmer breaches stubborn defence

NEVER-SAY-DIE New Brighton snatched a last-ditch victory against the odds at Hartsfield in North Two West.

They had to play for more than half the match a man down after skipper Kati Tuipulotu was red carded in the 38th minute for an alleged raking offence.

It was a messy game with few real scoring opportunities but the Blues took their chance in the eighth minute when Joe Bowmer crossed for the only try of the game after a good bout of passing involving Alan Hesketh, Chris Dale and Guy Stringer

Stacey Huskings cut the advantage with a Northwich penalty five minutes later and it stayed at 5-3 until the 75th minute when Huskings landed a second kick after Brighton were caught offside inside their own 22. But the Blues lack nothing in spirit and determination these days and they clinched their sixth league victory with a Jim Yarranton penalty in the fifth minute of added time.

Few could begrudge Brighton the points. They gave little away in defence and put in some good work up front to counter their numerical disadvantage.

Northwich, with only one success to date, are far from being among the strongest sides in the division but the Blues made light of the absence of key players, although they missed some kicking opportunities which could have made matters a little easier for them.
