Lowry in top show

BIRKENHEAD posted their sixth successive win in North One against a spirited Penrith.

Life was made easier when the Cumbrians had prop Gareth Simpson dismissed in the second quarter for punching.

But Park were already 15 points to the good at the time and the result was never in doubt. Steve Lowry gave a livewire display at scrum-half and Jon Sewell was prominent in a hard-working pack. Tony Handley settled Park with a 10th minute try. Christian Jones then touched down after a maul before Lowry burst over from a five-metre scrum on 20 minutes.

Handley added the goal after a penalty try for Park before Steve Wood landed a Penrith kick to make it 22-3 at the break.

Penrith battled bravely during the second period to gain tries from Mike Raine and Wood from an interception on his own 22. Wood converted both.

But the visitors gained their fifth try through winger Greg Hughes after good forward work.

Handley added the conversion and a penalty before Jones maintained his remarkable scoring form with the last try from a driving maul. Handley again added the extras. Park lost skipper Dave Ibbotson through injury.
