Double blow for West Park

DESPITE strong reports last week that Waterloo’s scrum-half Jon Broxson was moving to Red Rocks, the quality utility player changed his mind to sign up with rivals Caldy.

To rub further salt in the wounds, although he hadn’t registered in time for Saturday’s Merseyside National Three North derby, by the end of the afternoon, he was aware that his new club had just sneaked a valuable win that has moved them into the comfort midtable zone.

Off the field too there had been news that President John Fletcher had stepped down.

He has been at the core of administration for some time.

It means now that the club need to appoint both a chief executive in the wake of Rob Brier’s resignation as well as finding someone to step into the president’s shoes.

West Park’s defeat has seen them drop into the relegation zone.

However, their captain Stephen Briers is very confident that they will be there only for a short time.

“We experienced this situation last season,” Stephen said.

“We managed to avoid the drop by only a point but we are convinced that we can do better this time round. We have created our own downfall in recent weeks and last Saturday at Caldy was a repeat of the way we let the game slip away against Harrogate.

“We have had a long list of injuries at the start of the season but one by one players are returning and when we are full strength I am confident that we can match anyone in National 3 North.”

Briers himself has had successful rehabilitation after ankle surgery in the summer. He played his first game at full-back against Harrogate-not a new position for him because he did have three years with number 15 on his back when he was at Boroughmuir. At Paton Fields the selectors chose to put him in the centre and at times his angle of runs suggested that he might well be the man to break down some dogged Caldy defence.
