West Park on verge of appointing new chairman

DESPITE enjoying a rest from league action last weekend, having been knocked out of the EDF National Trophy, West Park have had little time to sit back.

Off the field there has been lots of talk on the way forward with the news that chief executive and chairman Rob Briers had stepped down, followed by the resignation of their president John Fletcher.

Not surprisingly, a general meeting has been called for tomorrow evening when it is understood a new chairman will be chosen.

Alhough recent announcements have been somewhat unsettling, there is every reason to believe that there is a glorious opportunity for the club to move forward.

Certainly if it felt by the membership that some restructuring is necessary, perhaps now is the time to do it.

On the field the team led by inspirational Stephen Briers is determined to get back on track and move away from near the foot of the National Three North table, where they share the same number of points with Morley, who are currently sitting in the drop zone.

Unfortunately they have been stunned with the news that scrum-alf Darren Wilson has returned to Preston Grasshoppers after only 10 games at Red Rocks. But the club has captured the signing of Liverpool University winger Matt Williams, a second year architectural student, who has been showing a lot of pace and guile recently at Wyncote.

Williams is not the first student to move to West Park in recent years with last year’s captain Craig Smithson playing superbly at number eight and prop Mark Devine firmly established.

Both Saturday’s visiotrs Darlington MP and West Park lost narrowly just over a week ago with the former missing out to Leicester Lions 20-18 and the latter losing 18-13 at Caldy.

Park’s mini section continues to flourish with the U7s,U8s and U9s all having a taste of success.

The U7/8s beat Fleetwood narrowly 13-12 with Josh Holland and Jack Worrall getting vital tries.

At U9s level Park won their games against Fleetwood with Tom Wadsworth and Adam Woosey scoring twice, as did Atherton.
