Sefton keep up title pursuit with Southport win

SEFTON stayed second in South Lancashire/Cheshire Two League with a 20-10 victory at Southport.

Peter McBride, Tom Fletcher and Mark Tyms gained tries and John Fenton a penalty and a conversion. The visitors registered with two tries through Andy Ritchie and Mike Dale. Wallasey went under 17-16 at home to Oswestry as they conceded two late converted tries. Keith Mahon and Dave Wilson went in for the losers and Paul Lewis struck two penalties. Collegiate came away 18-14 to the good from Crewe and Nantwich and Orrell Anvils 18-11 from Warrington. There were defeats for Ormskirk, 16-10 against Dukinfield, and Oldershaw, 17-15 at Ashton on Mersey.

St Edwards romped home 38-5 against Newton-le-Willows in Division Three. Peter Stephenson crossed three times and Martin McGeough and Matt McLaren once each. McGeough hit four conversions and a penalty and Tom Ashall one goal.

Parkonians claimed the Wirral derby at Prenton 17-15 thanks to tries from Gareth Price and Barry Owens, plus two conversions by Owens and a penalty by Terry Williams. Mike Salusbury and Gareth Knapman crossed for Prenton with Knapman getting one conversion and a penalty.

Ellesmere Port beat Holmes Chapel 27-19 but Mossley Hill crashed 41-0 at Trentham. Merseyside Police edged in 19-17 at Linley in Division Four and West Park Warriors saw off Congleton 36-10. There were defeats for Port Sunlight, 10-7 at Capenhurst, and St Mary’s, 25-18 at Knutsford while Birchfield failed 20-7 at Burnley in North Lancs One.
