Widnes wilt in Vase

TWO LATE converted tries put paid to Widnes in the Senior Vase.

It was never easy for the sides in the saturated conditions.

A Peter Wright try, and the conversion and a penalty by Andy O’Neil, gave Widnes a good start before Rossendale landed a penalty in reply.

The visiting pack paved the way for two tries in the third quarter plus a goal before skipper Paul Borg levelled the scores with a hard-earned try.

Extra time seemed likely but Widnes lost their way in the closing stages of the game as their defence wilted against sustained pressure from the visitors.
