Rugby Union: New Brighton shocker

PROMOTION-CHASING New Brighton made a poor start to the year with defeat at lowly Northwich in North Two West.

They are still in with a good chance of making a quick return to North One League but they are going to have to up the anti in their remaining nine matches if they are to achieve at worst a play-off opportunity.

Chief coach Steve Dorrington will be working hard to quickly put matters right for the trip to Sandbach on January 19. The Blues like many clubs do not have a game this Saturday.

They are likely to be missing centre Chris Dale after picking up two yellow cards at Northwich which almost certainly means an enforced lay off to be decided by a disciplinary committee.

Joe Bowmer who has proved a useful wing acquisition scored the try at Moss Farm and Stephen Dean added the goal plus a penalty.

The seconds have a re-arranged match at Rochdale on Saturday. Meanwhile tonight at Hartsfield the Wirral Floodlit Cup competition starts with Wallasey against Oldershaw (7.30pm).
