McDermott hoping Widnes maintain form

A STOP-start season stops again for many clubs tomorrow.

There are no scheduled league fixtures from North One down and many sides will have the weekend off and watch the televised internationals.

There will be some cup engagements and Widnes are among the league exceptions as they play a re-arranged South Lancashire/Cheshire One clash at Burnage.

Last week’s 50-33 success over Ruskin Park lifted the Heath Road outfit to a position of safety in the division and coach Lee McDermott is hoping the squad will perform freely over the closing weeks of the season. No changes are envisaged.

Burnage have improved considerably and will provide a tough test.

Wirral will play the Romanian under-21 side Cleopatra at Clatterbridge, but will field mainly a junior line-up but with experience in some positions. Cleopatra have spent a fortnight on a training camp at Barnston Dale and this will be their last outing.

They played a New Brighton XV on Wednesday evening at Hartsfield and won 36-24 in a lively encounter.

The last of the Wirral Floodlit Cup quarter-finals between Prenton and Port Sunlight is fixed for next Wednesday at New Brighton. The winners will play Capenhurst in the second semi-final on March 19. The other semi-final involving Wallasey and Parkonians is arranged for March 12.
