SPORT in Britain has become so commercially-orientated that if Waterloo is to achieve its much-desired status as a leading rugby union club, it will probably have to try and move away from its existing ground at Blundellsands.
Although well situated, with a railway station at hand, Blundellsands is so surrounded by housing that there is no room for the kind of development needed to help major expansion.
A leading club really does require three or four pitches fairly close together as well as the buildings needed to support the kind of commercial expansion essential for major development.
If they could find a suitable area reasonably close by and comfortably accessible I am sure Waterloo could sell their present ground for several million.
That would leave them with quite a lot of cash in hand, just what is needed to improve facilities, attract a few outstanding new players and expand their current status.
Having a pretty strong array of junior teams, not to mention, a useful ladies side, Waterloo appear to have stuck halfway up the ladder.
Merseyside has a long-standing reputation as a genuine rugby centre with several excellent rugby schools, like Merchant Taylors and St Mary’s, so let’s hope Waterloo’s future can be safeguarded.
