WINNINGTON enjoyed a day away from their North Division Two West relegation worries when more than 100 stalwarts attended the centenary players’ dinner at the Oaklands Hotel.
A dozen captains past and present were at the historic function including the club’s most famous old boy Dewi Morris, who went on to Orrell, Liverpool St Helens and England fame. Dewi brought along his old England colleague Wade Dooley, who brought the house down with some hilarious rugby stories.
The two oldest members present were Rupe Cragg and Don Gray, who joined Winnington in the 1930s and both went on to serve terms as chairman.
Winnington resumed training on Tuesday still smarting from their heaviest defeat of the season, 68-7 at home to Chester, and are determined to pick up the two wins in the five remaining games they reckon they need to avoid the drop.
Saturday sees Winnington visit Vale of Lune, currently just one place higher in the league. Good news came this week when wooden-spoonists Tyldesley had two points docked for fielding an ineligible player.
