Survival battle goes on

LIVERPOOL St Helens finally triumphed in a close finish as they outfought and eventually outplayed fellow North One strugglers Altrincham.

It was the Moss Laners’ turn to produce the winning try in time added on when Ashley Worsfold scored in the corner after LSH had moved the ball from deep in their own half.

This was a deserved win built on a supremely strong defensive display marshalled by the excellent James Cashman and the talismanic Tommy Jackson.

A hard-fought first half brought three points for each side, Worsfold landing a penalty and James Nettleton dropping a goal for Kersal.

LSH went ahead in the 49th minute with a fine try from winger Ashley Stuart. The home side countered but were unable to pierce the LSH line and settled for two penalties from Morris and Stewart to leave LSH one point behind with six minutes to go.

With the entire season now at stake, LSH responded magnificently to produce Worsfold’s try and keep their hopes of survival alive.
