Huddersfield 16, Birkenhead Park 7

BIRKENHEAD Park put up a much improved display against promotion-chasing Huddersfield before going down to defeat in North One League as penalties won it for the home side in the end.

After a bright opening against the wind and rain, Park were unlucky to concede a fifth-minute breakaway try by Chris Collins, converted by Colin Johnson, who extended the advantage with two penalties.

A third kick after 50 minutes took it to 16-0 but Birkenhead then produced some good work and were rewarded with a drive over try via Christian Jones, with Tony Handley converting.

Jon Sewell and David Blythe did well in the Park pack and there was a sound debut in the back-row for Dan Palmer.

Gavin Scott, who went on as a second-half replacement, made his presence felt in the centre.

Park play an EDF Energy Intermediate Cup semi-final at Bracknell on Saturday.
