Clubs launch double assault on Twickenham

BIRKENHEAD PARK and Chester step out in search of a Twickenham final place in the EDF Energy Intermediate Cup.

Park face a massive task away to high-riding South West One outfit Bracknell in the Intermediate competition but will have been heartened by an improved display at promotion chasing Huddersfield in North One last weekend.

They go for experience in the hope of becoming only the second side to win at the Bracknell ground in Bucks this season. Peter Hart at full-back, Phil Reynolds at prop and Jon Shudall at breakaway all resume for Birkenhead. Mark McKeown is chosen to partner Gavin Scott at centre with Gary Lunt switching to the wing.

“This is undoubtedly the biggest game we have had in recent seasons and the players are well up for it”, said coach Neil Shaw.

Newport, from Midlands One, stand in the way of a final place for Chester and will be bringing four coach loads of supporters to Hare Lane.

They are unbeaten since the turn of the year and saw off the Midlands One title favourites Loughborough Students last Saturday.

“The lads have worked hard all season and deserve a chance of a once in a life time opportunity at Twickenham”, said coach Rob Foden.

Caldy bid to enhance their prospects of a top six finish in National Three North at the expense of Cheshire rivals Macclesfield.
