CHESTER’S mighty season continued at the weekend as they clinched a place in the final of the EDF Energy Intermediate Cup.
Hopefully they will have clinched the North Two West title and promotion before their Twickenham day out on April 12 when they will face old rivals Birkenhead Park.
Chester, under coach Rob Foden, have done remarkably well after rebuilding their squad following relegation from North One.
Recent wins have been gained without the services of injured skipper Sean Green and James Whitelock-Wainwright and it proves the necessity to have a good back-up squad.
Victory was never really in doubt in the semi-final at home to Newport, Shropshire.
The opposition tried to make it a forward game but Chester managed enough possession to rule the roost behind the scrum.
Matt Sheen gained two tries with singles via Tom Foden, James Farrall and Simon Love.
Foden landed three of the conversions and a penalty for a 34-6 outcome.
“The players were quite superb against Newport”, said coach Foden.
“But we haven’t won anything yet and it will be very hard against Birkenhead in the final.”
Chester will have a welcome break from playing over the Easter period before their next league clash at home to Sandbach at the end of the month.
But they will host the Cheshire Cup final on Easter Saturday between Birkenhead Park and Macclesfield.
