CALDY LIONS took centre stage this weekend in a rearranged game in the Bateman Premier League at Waterloo.
Within five minutes Caldy were on the score-sheet as John Close took a quick tap from a penalty and sprinted past the distracted Waterloo players to score under the posts. Wylie kicked the conversion.
The second Caldy try took some time to come as Andrew Barnish completed a good flowing backs move to score just to the right of the posts. Wylie again converted to make it 14-0.
Unfortunately for the flow of the game, Mcglory took a knock to his knee after 20 minutes and had to leave the field to be replaced by Broadhurst with Wylie moving to fly-half and Devaney moving back to full-back. Caldy did manage to get a third try as Jordan Buffong finished off another good backs move to score out wide. Wylie missed the conversion to leave it 19-0 at half-time.
The second half was a scrappy affair with Waterloo clearly deciding to change their tactics and keep it in the forwards and it paid dividends as they scored two unanswered tries early in the second half on each of the wings due to sloppy defensive work. The moment of the match however came when John Close chipped through for Ben Lyon to collect and score out wide. The game finished 24–10 which means Caldy have done the double of Waterloo this season and leaves them with the possibility of finishing in fifth another creditable season.
Matt Green should take a great deal of credit for driving the second team in another excellent season.
No other games took place this weekend due to it being Easter.
Next weekend, Caldy first XV travel to Rugby Lions for the first time in their history. Caldy will be looking for another win having lost narrowly to Rugby earlier in the season. The second team have a free week and the third team entertain Wirral third XV looking for another win.
