A GAME played in dreadful conditions to which the home side adapted the better ended with Waterloo going down 21-7 away in National Two at Blaydon.
Despite an early try by Jason Smithson to give Blaydon a 5-0 lead, Waterloo had the better of the opening period and went in 5-7 ahead after a move from a set scrum ended with Bruni Pani claiming a try after the prop had been driven over the line, Alex Davies adding the conversion.
With conditions making the game a lottery Blaydon took the lead with a penalty from Richard Windell early in the second half.
Windell added two more to put Blaydon 14-7 ahead as Waterloo continued to fall foul of the referee.
Waterloo were forced to chase the game but were never able to match the physicality of the north east side who kept a stranglehold on possession.
They did have a few chances but all too often over-anxiousness and a desire to push a pass too far ended in the mud.
They did defend well despite an onslaught from the Blaydon pack but in the end the pressure told and the line was breeched in the final minute by a second try for Smithson, Windell adding the conversion
