Merseyside schoolchildren enjoy tag rugby festival

SIXTEEN primary schools from the Alt Valley area of Liverpool recently participated in the annual rugby tag festival, held at Fazackerley High School.

The majority of the 160 children attending had received coaching from the St Helens RLFC Community Development Team and their staff supported the event further by officiating all the matches.

The festival final was contested by St Matthews Scorpions and Rice Lane Rhinos; St Matthews the eventual victors after an extra-time try.

Robbie Boardman, festival organiser and SSCO Fazackerley High School said: “The day was a huge success; all the kids had a great time. There were lots of smiles and great commitment on show.”

The children have now been invited to play for an exciting new junior club in North Liverpool and training starts at De La Salle High School on Monday, April 7 (4-5pm).

John Farrell, Liverpool rugby league development officer, added: “We would like to build on the great work started in the schools by St Helens, provide these children with an opportunity to join a rugby league team and participate at the highest level possible.”
