NORTHWICH rose to the occasion with a convincing 16-6 victory at Winnington Park to secure vital points in their bid to retain North Division Two West.
The Blacks were superior to their hosts for most of the game with a virtually full-strength squad at the disposal of coach Paul Reid, who said: “We have been improving gradually for several weeks and it was great to win in such impressive style.”
The coach added: “We have been without a big group of players. It’s been a long tale of bad luck.”
With the authorities now decreeing that the bottom three clubs will be relegated, Northwich (13 points) are not yet safe as they lie only one above Vale of Lune, who pulled off a shock victory over New Brighton.
These are at home to Rochdale on April 12 and at Leigh the following Saturday. If they do remain outside the bottom three, Northwich will he operating in a higher division than neighbours Winnington Park for the first tie since their foundation as Mid-Cheshire College RUFC 40 years ago.
