Downbeat LSH face must-win brace to avoid drop

TORRENTIAL early morning rain forced the abandonment of LSH’s vital game against Hull last Saturday but the real dampener for the Moss Lane club came around about 5pm that evening.

While most of the 1st XV were watching their second team colleagues beat West Park seconds 22-8, relegation rivals Darlington and Penrith were recording crucial wins.

Darlington’s success at Sheffield means that LSH must now win their two remaining games, including the rearranged game against Hull on 26 April, to have any chance of staying in North One.

Even that would not be enough if Darlington were to defeat Birkenhead Park who travel to the North East this Saturday.

Needless to say the Moss Laners will be hoping that Merseyside neighbours Park can do them a huge favour this weekend.

LSH themselves travel to Cleckheaton who were beaten 30-3 by Penrith last Saturday a result which means that should Darlington lose both LSH and Penrith can overtake them to safety.

At which point it’s a Carol Vorderman job to work out the maths!

LSH Director of Rugby Paul Woodward is philosophical about the situation.

“It’s our own fault that we are in this position and we shouldn’t really have to rely on others,” he said.

“But there is no point dwelling on it, we simply have to focus on the next two games and win them both.”
