WITH just two days respite after Wednesday's Lancashire Cup success this was a game too far for Waterloo, going down 20-7 away at already relegated Halifax, who claimed only their second win of the season.
It was a mistake-ridden game in National Two with both sides guilty of elementary errors.
Save for an early scoring chance, Waterloo looked jaded and were up against it from the kick off as Halifax took the lead with a try from centre Oliver Marns. Joe Knowles added the conversion but with the visitors struggling to get into the game, a try from Will Kay again converted by Knowles, who also added a penalty, afforded the home side a 17-0 lead at the break.
Waterloo tried to come back in the second half and although they had Halifax under pressure were unable to break through a very solid defence.
Jason Duffy was dispatched to the sin bin and with his dismissal any serious attempt at getting back into the game disappeared as Halifax raised their game once more.
Knowles added a second penalty coming into the final 10 minutes and with five minutes remaining Waterloo at last got their break through as Nicloa Mazzucato dummied his way through for a try, Alex Davies slotting the conversion from wide out.
