COLLEGIATE Senior Colts took home the Lancashire Cup following a dramatic 12-9 victory over local rivals Widnes at Rochdale on Sunday May 4.
In a match played in very difficult conditions Collegiate struck the first blow with Chris Lloyd crossing in the corner following a sweeping combined move between forwards and backs.
This was converted by Adam Anderson.
Widnes came back strongly with two penalties, however, never really looked like they would cross the whitewash as Collegiate’s defence was manful throughout led by stand-off Tom Ashall who was outstanding.
In the second half Collegiate yet again started strongly and were rewarded with a try from Mark Wilcox who snuck under Widnes defences to stretch the lead.
From here on in it was backs against the wall, as Widnes threw everything they had at Collegiate and secured another penalty.
Collegiate’s discipline in the loose caused much concern as they conceded too many penalties, but with Widnes knowing that a draw wouldn’t be enough, as Collegiate would have won via try count back, they continued to push to corners and go for the crucial try.
Fortunately the defence held solid until the final whistle, which seemed like an eternity and the silverware was coming to Liverpool Cricket Club.
A glorious day for the club as a whole and this is the sixth trophy won in a few weeks.
The under-11s and U15s won the Lancashire Cup, the U16s won the League Cup and with Junior and Senior Colts winning their leagues this trophy capped off a fantastic season.
