Northwich’s near miss

NORTHWICH were desperately unlucky not to wind up their season by retaining the Cheshire Vase in a thrilling final at Winnington Park on Bank Holiday Monday.

Trailing 10-7 to Sandbach at half-time, the Blacks dominated a second period which was stretched to 50 minutes by a succession of injuries.

Andy Bown twice fell just short with long-distance late penalties, then Jamie Mirana shaved the underside of the crossbar with an attempted drop goal.

Chairman Sam Naylor said: “It was a great effort and I was proud of every man jack of them. We have ambitious plans for next season, but on that showing head coach Paul Reid will not need to bring in too many new players.”
