Park show great potential

BIRKENHEAD PARK’S preparations for the new season saw two excellent warm-up victories over rivals Waterloo and New Brighton.

Park battered Waterloo 33-10 and followed that romp to a 38-0 win over the Blues.

Park have also received a timely boost by being awarded a Civic Reception by the Mayor of Wirral in recognition of their achievements last season. Not only did Park reach the EDF Intermediate Cup final at Twickenham but they also lifted the Cheshire Cup and finished fourth in North Division One, their highest finish since 1988.

Chris Jones has taken over the captaincy from Dave Ibbotson while the vastly experienced Shaun Gallagher is heading the coaching team. Tony Handley and Dave Blyth are also taking a prominent role in training.

Park’s new changing block is now virtually ready as the facility improvement continues at the Upper Park.

Park chairman Greg Casey said: “We have now got some very good facilities in place but it is a crucial time for the club as we seek to ensure they are managed effectively to put the club on a good long term financial footing.”

Park continue their preparations with another scheduled warm up game at the Upper Park against Lymm on Saturday (kick-off 3pm).
