Caldy dig deep to overcome Waterloo

CALDY got the better of Waterloo in the ‘other Merseyside derby’ of the weekend but the result does not tell the full story of a hard fought match between the two neighbouring sides.

Waterloo were tenacious in defence and at times looked dangerous in attack but the superior strength and fitness of Caldy eventually decided the outcome.

The first score came on 20 minutes when Gavin Roberts powered into the 22 before offloading to the supporting Broxson who scored under the posts. Vasey duly converted. On 32 minutes, Arnold got his first try of the day when he forced his way over the line and Vasey converted to leave the half-time score 14-0 to the visitors.

Caldy scored again at the start of the second half when an excellent backs move saw Woof feed Roberts who scored out wide and Vasey added the extras. Mark Turner added to the Caldy tally although Vasey missed the kick. Waterloo then got a well deserved try themselves and the biggest cheer of the day when Nkije Tchakoute, a thorn in the side of Caldy all day, scored after a period of prolonged attack in the Caldy 22. Further tries by Soutar and a second for Arnold stretched Caldy’s lead to 40-5 before Waterloo completed the scoring with a chip and chase from the free scoring James O’Brien.
