MARK LAWRENSON: Liverpool FC are going to need another ‘Istanbul’

IT is still possible that Liverpool can knock Chelsea out of the Champions League tomorrow but I think it’s improbable.

If Rafael Benitez’s side are going to overhaul a 3-1 deficit from the first leg at Anfield then they’ll need to produce a comeback as dramatic as Istanbul.

Obviously to go through Liverpool will need to win 3-0 or even 4-1 like they did at Old Trafford against Manchester United but that was a completely different scenario.

Quite a few people have said ‘well Liverpool managed to get four at Old Trafford’ but United were going for it.

A 1-0 or even 2-0 defeat is still good enough for Chelsea on this occasion so they can just sit back and consolidate what they have by destroying the game and stopping Liverpool from playing.

Chelsea are very capable of doing just that so I think that Liverpool are going to have to score in the first half because the later they score the more open they’ll have to be themselves.

The good thing is that Liverpool are scoring freely at the moment and it’s not just the usual suspects of Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard who are getting all the goals.

Torres chipped in with a couple in the 4-0 demolition of Blackburn on Saturday but it wasn’t just all about him.

Liverpool will also be encouraged with the way that Bolton hit back at Chelsea on Saturday, almost earning a draw when recovering from 4-0 down to lose 4-3 and there will be a few nagging doubts as to whether Chelsea might be suffering a hangover from that. But from Liverpool’s point of view, they don’t have to change anything going into the game.

They’re playing well and managed to give Gerrard a rest against Blackburn.

Much was made of the supposed ‘job’ Michael Essien did on Stevie in the first leg but he wasn’t fully fit.
