MARK LAWRENSON: Everton FC being unhappy with a point is good sign

IT says a lot about Everton’s performance at Arsenal that they were disappointed to only come away with a point.

Before the game David Moyes would surely have taken that but the way the game went they could have got three.

If James Vaughan had shown the same composure as Steven Pienaar then it would have been game over but you can’t really blame him – maybe someone who had been on the field longer and with half a yard more sharpness might have had more luck.

But Everton were impressive – they approached the game in the right way, flew in to tackles and made Arsenal hurry.

Too many teams sit back and let them pay pretty football.

Marouane Fellaini was key to that and looks outstanding in his deeper midfield role.

We’re slipping into insanity if we can’t let fans make their own decisions

SINCE when do football matches get called off because some council is frightened a supporter might slip on the ice outside a ground?

If a football pitch is playable then we should all be able to make up our own minds about whether we want to go or not.

You can open your curtains, see the snow and go back to bed if you want.

Or you can decide to make the trip and brave the arctic conditions.

Just like the Everton fans did in London on Saturday in fact.

I was at that game and learned that at the Emirates there are 5,000 people employed to work on a match day.

Although the pitch inside was fine, the conditions in the surrounding areas were not good at all.

But those 5,000 people somehow managed to get there to make sure the game went ahead, then the fans followed – including the 2,500 Everton fans who had to make one of the longest scheduled journeys for any set of supporters in the Premier League over the weekend.

It was left to human beings to make up their own minds about going and it all went off without a hitch.

Okay, some areas were treacherous over the weekend, but I bet the vast majority of clubs – if they had really wanted – could have got those games on.

Players train all week and fans buzz with anticipation ahead of matchday only for some council to call it off because they’re worried someone might claim.

There were still plenty of people queuing to get to the Trafford Centre is all that snow and ice. So are you telling me football fans can’t get to games now in the same conditions?

Do me a favour!
