Mark Lawrenson: comebacks of Mikel Arteta and Phil Jagielka another great piece of management by Everton FC’s David Moyes

THE comebacks of Mikel Arteta and Phil Jagielka have to go down as another great piece of management by David Moyes.

Okay, so their inclusion in the side has been enforced in many ways because of the relative lack of resources Moyes has had at his disposal this season.

But the way he has shown no hesitation in throwing in two of his most important players is really impressive.

Arteta has looked close to his best and while Jagielka did get caught out a couple of times at Birmingham at the weekend, this is bound to happen.

The important thing is, playing every week is the only way that they will get back to the levels Moyes needs them to be at.

Reserve team football can’t do that and being eased back in gradually defeats the object if, six to eight games down the line, the players haven’t been on the pitch enough to get their full match sharpness back.

The sooner you chuck them in and tell them to get on with it, the sooner they will be back to doing what they do best.

Also to Moyes’s credit it the emergence of Johnny Heitinga as a force to be reckoned with.

Yet another signing that can play in a variety of different positions – and all with the same level of consistency.
