Mark Lawrenson: Everton FC fly the flag for Merseyside

IT’S not just the fact that Everton are winning games –with Saturday’s victory over Bolton being their seventh at home in succession – that’s impressing me.

It’s the style of football they are playing. They are very easy on the eye.

They needed a bit of luck to get in front against Bolton but the free-kick by Mikel Arteta was sublime.

And the build-up to the second goal was great to see as well, with patient and precise passing used to unlock the defence.

I would say that Everton are playing better football than Liverpool at the moment and when you look at the two Merseyside clubs, they are the ones who are progressing.

Even if they miss out on Europe, the way they are finishing the campaign suggests that there is a very, very good team at Goodison Park waiting to be unleashed on next season.
