Mark Lawrenson: No pressure on Murray to play says Smith

NEW Davis Cup captain Leon Smith insists he will not put any pressure on Andy Murray to play in Great Britain’s next tie against Turkey in July.

The British number one chose to miss the last match in Lithuania, where defeat put Britain on the verge of relegation to Europe/Africa Zone Group III and prompted the resignation of former captain John Lloyd.

Smith is best known as the coach of Murray during his junior career but the 34-year-old revealed his appointment may not mean an immediate return for the world number four.

“In terms of playing the next tie, the situation doesn’t change,” said Smith. “He’ll make his decision again on a tie-by-tie basis and I’ll respect if he decides to play or not play. I fully support that he has got wider things to do in tennis. He’s ambitious, he wants to win a slam and I respect that.”

“With the group of players we’ve got outside Andy, we should still expect them to win,” added Smith.
