Mark Lawrenson: Everton FC optimism, Liverpool fears during the close season

LIVERPOOL finished the season in seventh, with Everton one place behind.

But which of the Merseyside clubs will be more positive about improving on a disappointing finish next year?

In the final analysis, Everton look more of a team and more likely to view next season with fresh optimism.

Unfortunately, that optimism doesn’t come from the prospect of spending money on five or six new players to take them on to the next level.

It’s more about building on the good work that’s already being done by the current squad – a squad that needs a few tweaks rather than major surgery.

Some luck would be nice to ensure that the best players are all fit at the same time, too. David Moyes may well have to beg, steal or borrow in the transfer window once again, but the way he has worked wonders in the market in recent years means this shouldn’t worry anyone.
