TOULOUSE’S victory over Biarritz in Saturday’s Heineken Cup final was their fourth victory in a Heineken Cup final in the competition’s 15-year history.
Munster, Wasps and Leicester have each won it twice, with Wasps the last English club to win it back in 2007.
Toulouse are at the forefront of a wave of popular success in French club rugby, which has turned their domestic league into a French rugby union equivalent of the Premiership in the UK.
Most of the top clubs spend big money on their playing budgets – they have no salary cap in France which helps in this matter – and they have attracted the best playing talent from all parts of the world.
Besides getting the best union players, they have been adventurous and imaginative in attracting top rugby league talent to their competition as well.
Indeed the only player to score a try for Biarritz in Saturday’s match against Toulouse was the former Brisbane Bronco, Karmichael Hunt.
