Sean McGuire says the dark mood around Anfield could help new Liverpool boss Roy Hodgson

WITH exactly a month to go before Liverpool begin their Premier League campaign, it already feels that it is lacking momentum.

Although the managerial uncertainty has ended, the ownership saga continues to cast a very large, dark cloud over the first days of pre-season preparations.

A strong start to the season is important to create a mood of some optimism around Anfield – a task that appears harder with Fernando Torres’s injury.

Expectations are low and arguably lower than for any other previous Premier League season.

But that can be a benefit to Roy Hodgson as he settles in.

Arsenal and Manchester City are tough opening fixtures and draws, even defeats, would not be disastrous.

But this presents the rare opportunity to over-achieve and to gain some real velocity in the opening weeks – providing the foundations for a season that can be a success within the boundaries of what is realistic for the team to achieve.
