NEW season, new strip, new sponsors, new manager – and hopefully new owners.
It’s been all change at Anfield in the close season, and though the levels of optimism are not as high as this time last year, they’re certainly a lot better than three months ago. The predicted meltdown hasn’t happened; Gerrard and Torres have affirmed their commitment to the club – eventually; and Roy Hodgson’s openness, integrity and enthusiasm have gone a long way to dispelling the negativity that hung over the club last year.
Hodgson’s appointment no doubt disappointed some, particularly those who campaigned so vociferously for Kenny Dalglish’s return, not least his son.
I bow to no man in my admiration, nay worship, of King Kenny, but I’m glad he wasn’t seriously considered for the post. The popular clamour for his installation all felt a bit ‘Newcastle United’ to me; an understandable desire in times of adversity to turn to those who have served you well before, but best resisted if the Geordies’ experience is to be avoided.
Fear of failure would also have cast a heavy shadow over a second period of tenure – mine not his. I’ve already seen one of my heroes tarnished by an unsuccessful spell as manager; I don’t think I could bear it happening again.
In truth, Hodgson’s arrival was the best we could have hoped for given our current circumstances, and I don’t mean to damn him with faint praise.
