Mark Lawrenson: Play to Yakubu’s strengths and goals could flow again

ONE point from three games doesn’t make for good reading, but there is no need for Everton supporters to panic just yet.

I watched the game against Aston Villa on Sunday and without doubt Everton will play a lot worse and win the majority of those games.

Results are always magnified at this time of the season because it is the start and people are trying to work out how teams are going to perform.

Sure, maybe fans looked at the last two games against Wolves and Villa and thought there would be six points from those. But looking at Villa, they were ordinary in the extreme and didn’t have many players missing.

And who would you rather support come May – Everton or Villa? The neutrals would say Everton on Sunday’s evidence.

Yes, there is a little lack of cutting edge with the team at the moment.

Jermaine Beckford is still finding his feet at this level and it might be a case of taking him out of the firing line and putting someone in with a little more experience until the team starts winning. It would be easier for him then.

Louis Saha hasn’t scored in the Premier League since February but Everton looked more potent with him on the pitch. Anyway, his goals are like London buses, once he gets one a lot more will come shortly afterwards.

You can understand the frustration of Everton’s fans at yet another slow start, but cream rises to the top eventually.

So where are Everton going to finish? Not in the top four, they don’t have depth of squad. But they’ll be challenging for sixth or seventh.

David Moyes is probably searching for something a little bit different, trying to work out where they can get a goal. Sometimes goals just appear, you don’t have to play well.

Moyes is also still seeking his best XI, but the same could be said for most of the teams in the Premier League. Do Manchester City know theirs? Liverpool? Tottenham? Arsenal? Everyone is a little bit like that.

With lack of money meaning there are unlikely to be any new arrivals today, Moyes may start looking at working Yakubu back into the team, provided he isn’t sold and gets himself fit.

The problem you will always have with Yakubu is you have to accept him for what he is. He won’t run in all sorts of channels but get the ball in the box and he will get you goals.

If he’s still an Everton player this time tomorrow, Moyes might have to change the system slightly where someone else might do his running for him.

Simply, the Yakubus of this world are never going to change.

Learn to live with him and learn to love him. Don’t think about what he can’t do, concentrate on what he can.

What’s the best way we can serve him? Find that out, and the goals can flow again for Everton.
