SO the mini-crisis is over and Liverpool have their first Premier League win of the season and Fernando Torres ended a 10-games streak without a goal.
Perhaps starting the season slowly can be a good thing for Roy Hodgson. If his team had earned three big wins then maybe people would start claiming they could reach the Champions League and challenge for the title.
But, as with Hodgson’s transfer moves, Liverpool are getting there at their own pace.
Paul Konchesky will be a good signing, and I saw a fair bit of Javier Mascherano’s replacement Raul Meireles while covering the World Cup in South Africa.
He looked decent in Portugal’s team, and seems one of those players who is a Steady Eddie week in, week out. You know what you will get, and if you have someone like Steven Gerrard alongside him then that’s fine.
With Meireles following Christian Poulsen in joining Lucas Leiva in midfield, in my view Hodgson is trying to build a base. Whoever plays in the centre of midfield will keep things solid and allow the players further forward to take one or two creative chances.
Nevertheless, Hodgson will no doubt attempt to sign a striker today to take the burden off Fernando Torres, and I think a loan move for Mario Gomez would suit Liverpool.
With Carlton Cole, there can be days where he looks unplayable, but I don’t see him scoring too many goals.
