IT IS pointless to pass any kind of judgement on Wayne Rooney which is not based entirely on his ability to play football.
The only function that Wayne performs, so to speak, is playing professional football, and it is therefore, self-evidently, the only thing upon which he can be judged.
As far as I know he has made no comments on politics, the economy, climate change, our place in the EU, the prospects for peace in the Middle East, the role of the family in modern society or the next winner of the Booker prize.
If Wayne had been daft enough to make pompous statements about the sanctity of marriage or the perils of infidelity, and had then been proved to be a hypocrite, he would deserve to be the subject of criticism and public opprobrium. He has not and he does not.
