Mark Lawrenson: Glen Johnson must wing it for Liverpool FC

Glen Johnson

THE lack of attacking potency on show at St Andrew’s has left me feeling Liverpool must shake up the midfield in future away games.

I think we’ve established that the defence won’t concede many goals so there’s no reason why Roy Hodgson can’t go for a win – we know how costly draws can be from bitter experience.

You can question Fernando Torres all you like but he scored twice for Spain last week and given service he will deliver.

But the midfield at Birmingham was too samey, too cautious and far too careful for my liking.

I know Joe Cole will be back but there needs to be more happening out wide.

The only solution I can see is to push Glen Johnson up front as an out and out right winger.

He loves getting forward and going past players and he can get goals from that position too.

He needs to be given the freedom to forget about the defensive duties, which are quite often the weakest part of his game.

It would be the kind of attacking statement Liverpool really need to make.
