I THINK it sums up Liverpool’s lack of attacking options at the moment that Glen Johnson looked their most likely outlet to produce a goal in Prague on Thursday.
I always think it’s important to head into a home leg with an away goal and although Kenny didn’t play it over-defensive, they just didn’t look like scoring.
Still, the game will have helped the manager nail a few truths about his players.
Mainly, that David Ngog can’t play that lone role.
He just doesn’t seem to get the concept of holding the ball up and you have to wonder if he will ever make it big, even if he played with another striker.
Johnson, however, looks the most effective player going forward. You can criticise him defensively, but I can’t see who else in the team gets wide and gets to the byline.
Martin Kelly has done well at right-back but if Kenny wants to revert to the wing-back system that was so successful at Chelsea it’s ideal for Johnson on the right flank.
And when you think about the type of service Andy Carroll will need, what’s the point in not playing someone who can ping crosses into the box?
That said, I don’t see many problems on Thursday.
Thomas Repka spent the first leg just trying to take out Ngog – get behind him and a two or three-goal victory to ensure progress should be no problem.
