Ian Doyle: No relegation idea would result in fans leaving, not foreign owners

IN a sport of increasingly hare-brained ideas, it takes something truly special to be so stupefyingly nonsensical.

So congratulations to LMA chief executive Richard Bevan, who this week decided to up the ante of Premier League greed by suggesting clubs may vote to do away with promotion and relegation.

Foreign owners don’t like the idea of it, he said.

Where’s the sense in their investment being jeopardised by the failings of some blokes kicking a bag of air around?

What piffle. The beauty of English football – and indeed any league pyramid – is that teams such as Norwich City and Swansea City can battle their way up the divisions to deservedly take their place alongside the big guns on the strength of talent, not solely their bank balance.

Wigan Athletic chairman Dave Whelan talks an awful lot of rubbish, but he was right to threaten to pull his team out of the Premier League should relegation ever be abolished.

If it happens, then we all may as well pack up and go home.
