Mark Lawrenson: Double standards behind Luis Suarez charge show Respect campaign not working

FOR me, this whole Respect campaign is not working. And the latest charge the FA have slapped on Liverpool FC striker Luis Suarez confirms that.

I seriously don’t understand why he has been censured by a Football Association that have gone cap in hand to Switzerland to get a third chopped off Wayne Rooney’s international suspension.

Respect will only really work once abusive supporters start being arrested. They have plenty of footage in HD nowadays, so it shouldn’t be too difficult to spot.

It seems fans can abuse any player at a match, and I think that’s wrong. And the FA cannot say ‘that’s just the way it is’ and then turn around and charge someone for responding to it.

It doesn’t matter whether it’s Suarez or whoever. If a player has to put up with vitriolic abuse, then he should be able to have a go back.

Look, I was a footballer for many years. You expect a bit of abuse, you expect banter and you don’t mind that. It’s part of the experience of going to a football match. But there’s a line that needs to be drawn.

Harry Redknapp suffered unbelievable abuse at Aston Villa a while back from a dad and his son who were both swearing at him, and Redknapp made the point he couldn’t have a go back. Would that have happened in the street? I don’t think so.

Once one overly-abusive fan is cautioned by the police, then they’d all think twice about it. I fully agree to fans venting their spleen, particularly if a team is not playing well.

But individual, personal abuse is going way too far.

At least Suarez managed to put that behind him and get back on the scoring trail against Queens Park Rangers at the weekend.

Liverpool must surely be on the verge of handing out a beating. Even QPR were striking the woodwork for them on Saturday.

Nevertheless, Suarez needs someone within his vicinity that’s a clever player, and when Steven Gerrard comes back it will be interesting to see where he plays.
