THE biannual mad scramble to switch the television over when Jim White appears on Sky Sports News is now at an end.
And it begs the question: should we do away with the transfer window? Clubs don’t like it. Managers don’t like it. Players aren’t keen on it. And agents absolutely love it (to be fair, that’s a good argument to keep it).
But it does seem somewhat daft that, like a student finishing their essay, everybody seemingly leaves everything to the last minute.
Such hectic wheeling and dealing inevitably leads to mistakes. And, one or two notable exceptions aside, clubs are reticent to part with anything other than underperforming players during a January transfer window halfway through a season.
David Moyes, though, hasn’t had much choice but to gamble in an attempt to bolster his team’s misfiring strikeforce.
Louis Saha will prove no great loss given his form this season, while Diniyar Bilyaletdinov may be more useful in his departure than while at the club should Nikica Jelavic prove a success, the £5million raised by the Russian’s exit facilitating a move for the Rangers striker.
Many have found the gap from Scottish to English football too large to bridge. But, with 36 goals in 55 matches, Jelavic at least comes with solid credentials.
And the last forward to make a major switch from Ibrox to Goodison didn’t do too badly, did he?
