LOSING Rio Ferdinand is a big blow to England – mainly because replacing him gives Fabio Capello a real headache.
I think the England manager really likes Jamie Carragher.
But I’m sure he is wary of sending him out alongside John Terry and the relative lack of pace that would leave England with in the centre of defence.
Someone like Ledley King might be better in there as he has the capacity to recover if attackers get in behind the back four.
But I’m more concerned with how England line up at the other end of the field.
Although I’m pleased Steven Gerrard has got the captain’s armband now, it’s where he plays that will determine how influential he really is.
I’m sticking to my hope that he is behind Wayne Rooney in a 4-2-3-1 formation.
If he has to marshal the left side my fear is that he won’t be involved enough. That’s not only worrying for him as a captain but because of the way he likes to play as well.
Making him skipper suggests Capello wants the team to revolve around him so I hope the team selection reflects this.
