Tranmere better balanced this time out says Moore

Ronnie Moore

“Overall and very happy with the players we signed.”

According to Moore, Rovers took an interest in only a small percentage of the hundreds of footballers who came onto the market as free agents this summer.

He said: “There was a massive number of players looking for clubs this year, perhaps 600 – but not a lot of quality.

“There were perhaps 20 players of the quality we will looking for – and there was a lot of competition for them.”

Moore says he may yet add another signing before the League One campaign kicks off with a home fixture against Leeds United on Saturday, August 11. For the moment the squad is similar in numbers to last season.

Meanwhile, Tranmere are ready to collect a windfall of more than £250,000 if Jason Koumas's transfer from West Brom to Wigan Athletic goes through.

Rovers regotiated a sell-on clause when they sold home-grown prospect Koumas to Albion for just over £2million in 2002. Under the agreement with the Baggies, the Wirral club are entitled to 15 per cent of the excess on any fee over £3.5m.

Albion last night accepted a Wigan bid of £5.3m for the Wales international midfielder from Wallasey.

However the deal is subject to Koumas passing a medical and agreeing personal terms with the Latics.
