Ex-Rover McGreal has trials with Colchester

FORMER Tranmere defender John McGreal is on trial at Colchester United with a view to earning a contract with the Championship club for the new season.

The 35-year-old centre back was released by Burnley at the end of last season.

Liverpool-born McGreal, a product of Tranmere's youth development system, made more than 200 appearnces for Rovers before joining Ipswich in 1998.A ground collection, organised by the Sam Bencheikh Memorial Fund, will be held at Prenton Park prior to Tranmere's opening League One fixture against Leeds a week on Saturday.

Rovers supporters will be asked to help raise funds for a new minibus to be used for community disabled football coaching sessions.

The fund was set up following the death of Sam Bencheikh, a popular young member of Tranmere's Football in tne Community staff, three years ago.
