Shrimps pose no small challenge

TRANMERE should not need a second warning about Morecambe’s potential to spring a Johnstone’s Paints Trophy upset at Prenton Park tonight.

The Football League newcomers made waves with Carling Cup victories over Preston and Wolves last month and take on another Championship club, Sheffield United, in the third round. The Shrimps have also made his sound start to their first season in League Two with Sammy McIlroy taking the divisional manager of the month award for August.

McIlroy has a strong selection handed to choose from and may make some changes from the side drew 1-1 at Notts County last Saturday.

Tranmere manager Ronnie Moore insists his side’s five-goal victory in a pre-season game at Christie Park in July offers little as a form guide to tonight’s encounter.

He said: “Morecambe have added a number of players since then.

“They are on a nice little roll. They play 4-5-1, so it’ll be hard to break them down. We will have to be patient.”
