TRANMERE Reserves suffered their first defeat of the season in Pontin’s Holidays League Division One West at Brunton Park.
The scoreline was possibly harsh for the young Rovers outfit which paid dearly for some naïve defending.
Tranmere were not without their chances but enjoyed little luck in front of goal.
Carl Tremarco had a shot blocked and Mike Blundell was denied by a last ditch tackle. Terry Gornell and Alan Cresswell got in good headed efforts and Mike Jones had a half-chance he was unable to convert.
Carlisle opened the scoring after 15 minutes and doubled their lead seven minutes into the second-half. It was all over for Tranmere when Shane McWeeney was beaten for the third time on 70 minutes but they never threw in the towel.
Rovers coach Shaun Garnett said: “I cannot fault the way the lads applied themselves. They tried to play good football but there was a lack of discipline at times. But it is a very young side and they are going through a learning curve.”
TRANMERE ROVERS RESERVES: McWeeney, Holmes, Tremarco, Richardson (Denson 22), A Taylor, Henry, Blundell, Beahon (Macauley 74), Jones, Gornell, Cresswell. Subs: Kennedy, Fraughan, Corrigan.
