MANAGER Ronnie Moore admitted Tranmere missed an opportunity to stretch out the League One front-runners after they were held to a second home draw in four days.
As Crewe left Prenton Park with a point, Moore said: “I’m disappointed. We had the chance to widen the gap over the last few days but all we have done is allow everyone else to close up on us.
“I should not be complaining too much when we are unbeaten in eight games. But we needed to play at a high tempo and take the game by the scruff of the neck tonight. We didn’t do that. We did not pressurise or turn Crewe and did not get the ball in the right areas.
“Crewe can sometimes pass the ball too much – square all of the time – and we were lulled into doing that at times.”
Moore felt the penalty award for a challenge by Ben Chorley on Chris McCready, may have been harsh. However, he admitted Rovers had enjoyed a fortunate escape when Danny O’Donnell missed a straightforward chance for the visitors just before the break.
The manager had words of encouragement for local winger, Mike Jones, who set up the 64th-mintue equaliser for Chris Shuker in his first League One start for Tranmere.
Moore said: “Mike did well with the goal. The problem we have, with Steve Davies out of the side at the moment, is that both of our wingers are right footed.”
Rovers hope to get the results today of the analysis of a scan made on Davies’s injured knee yesterday.
