TRANMERE moved to the top of the League One table with an impressive and merited victory at Roots Hall.
Rovers also extended their unbeaten record on the road in League One to five games.
Centre back Ben Chorley put the visitors ahead - his first goal for the club, a first-time shot from a 30th minute corner by the outstanding Paul McLaren.
Southend equalised on the stroke of half time through Adam Barrett's crisp finish.
But Tranmere regained the initiative and went back in front on 55 minutes when striker Gareth Taylor powered home a header from a right wing free kick by McLaren.
